Oozing Forth and Smearing McCain

Obama's not the only one to be labeled a "Manchurian Candidate." That's right, folks. The fellows who organized against John Kerry in 2004, Vietnam Veterans Against John Kerry, have reorganized and resurfaced as Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain. Actually, VVAJM have engaged in this particular smear for a while now.

The fellow behind both the anti-Kerry and anti-McCain efforts, Ted Sampley, actually runs a business that profits off of the POW/MIA issue, and he has fostered a long-standing hatred of McCain. An article from February 2004, "The Vietnam Smear--from McCain to Kerry"by Joe Conason, offers detailed background information on this questionable character and his accusations.

Although I do not support McCain's presidential effort, it is vile that he be subjected to accusations of anti-American behavior. Perhaps this time the media--whether mainstream or alternate--will actually expose Sampley and his defamation machine. But a national, and public, discrediting is doubtful. The media needs an audience, and, sadly, the American public thrives on scandal, rumour, and innuendo. We love watching a good man or woman get bloodied, disgraced, and ruined. Just ask Larry Sinclair and his group of true believers.

After a few months' respite, and a glimpse of an election season that might be about policy, opportunity, and positive perspectives, cynicism again rears its repulsive head.
